If satire is what closes on Saturday night, then it's a surprise that Albert Brooks's Real Life opened at all. Released in 1979, Brooks's high-concept comedy about a Hollywood production that films the lives of an ordinary family had the added burden of skewering a cultural phenomenon that didn't even exist at the time, reality television.

More blatantly, the movie shows Brooks outright meddling with his subjects to get his desired portrait of reality. At a tumultuous meeting, the psychologists assigned to the project tell Brooks that the family really is falling apart, and that the nonstop filming is to blame. More offensive to him is another criticism: that the reality he is filming is a false one. Unmoved by their entreaties, Brooks soldiers on. The pall of depression lifts (helped along by his gift of a big-screen TV), and he memorializes the family's return to cheery normalcy with a montage of the Yeagers at play, in slow motion no less. Setting out to record uninflected reality, Brooks instead imposes his own carefully edited version of everyday life--perhaps the reality he imagined he would see all along. Predating Reagan's "Morning in America" ads by five years, the montage underscores the fraudulence of such idealized visions of American reality.

It's not just our notion of reality that the movie questions, but our uncritical acceptance of its various representations. The movie closes with Brooks setting fire to the Yeagers' home, giving him his slam-bang ending. "Their house is really burning!" he yells triumphantly as the cameras keep rolling.

Das bin nicht ich. Das ist Bruno Kreisky. Ich für meinen Teil bin 28 Jahre alt und ein kurzsichtiger, wenig- und langsamlesender, aufmerksamkeits- und noch vielgestalt andersgestörter, ungeschickter, linkshändiger, unausdauernder, übergewichtiger, un-unaufgeregter und unkonzentrierter stummer Schwätzer ohne Führerschein (sowie ohne Ehrgeiz, Ziel im Leben, eigene Wohnung, geregeltes oder sonstwie geartetes Geschlechtsleben, usw …), dafür mit unregelmäßigem Bartwuchs und Stoffwechsel sowie dem starken Wunsch, Drängen und Verlangen, der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft doch noch ein Ende zu bereiten (warum dennoch der Sonnenkönig dort oben hängt, darf jeder für sich selbst ausknobeln). In Ermangelung eines besseren ist mein Lebensmotto ‹wenn schon, denn schon›, was angesichts meiner Defizite im menschlichen, zwischenmenschlichen und übermenschlichen Bereich niemanden wundert, der mich kennt. Ich weiß nicht, was ich mit diesem Blog eigentlich will, aber ich schreibe es mit kleineren und größeren Unterbrechungen doch schon seit 2819 Tagen, und so lange es mich noch freut, wird weitergeschrieben. Das letzte Mal hat es hier am 22.05.2012 um 20:29 irgendetwas neues gegeben.
